INVITE

Science communication practitioners, researchers, students, teachers and other interested people, to participate in the

International Symposium on Public Communication of Science and Technology and IX National Colloquium of Science Recreation

To be held in the city of Zacatecas, Mexico, from April 10 to 12, 2024, with the theme

Broadening the discussion spectrum: new voices, new knowledge

The central focus of the event lies on the inclusion of sectors that traditionally have not been incorporated into the discussion about science communication, in the interests of developing a fuller relationship between science and society. At the same time, it seeks to highlight the importance of science communication work carried out from the Global South, especially Latin America, with the aim of broadening and diversifying the field with non-predominant voices.

People interested in participating as speakers during the event must send an abstract in English (with the recommended option of adding a Spanish version), between 200 and 400 words, through the official platform of the event: https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/PCSTIS2024. Accepted presentations may be given in English or Spanish. Proposals must be submitted within one of the following thematic axes:

  1. Science recreation

Public communication activities about science – such as workshops, demonstrations, talks, challenges, games and plays-, which seek to create exciting experiences, assigning a leading role to the participants. They are based on synchronous interaction with the public, to re-elaborate scientific issues in a way that is relevant to them.

  1. Museums and science centers

Exhibition, conservation and interpretation work, including interactive exhibits, related to different aspects of science and technology. Presenters should address the processes relevant to museum´s collections, complementary activities and collaborative initiatives with other institutions.

  1. Science journalism

Journalistic work that covers scientific news and issues related to science, technology, and innovation. This could include contributions about social dimensions of science and scientific aspects related to current affairs.

  1. Training and professionalization of science communication practitioners

Processes to attract, train and provide professional development for science communicators in different media and fields.

  1. Research on public communication of science

Works of reflection, analysis, or evaluation that treat the communication of science as an object of study. These should offer theoretical-practical elements that can enrich our understanding of the theory and practice of science communication.

  1. Inclusiveness in the public communication of science

This thematic axis includes strategies to increase the participation of women, older adults, disabled people, the LGBT+ community, and other underrepresented groups, in science communication activities.

The abstract submission system will be open from July 15 to September 23, 2023 at 8:00 p.m., Mexico City time (GMT -6h). Accepted proposals will be announced on November 15th.

Presenters may choose to submit their full paper for publication in the book of proceedings that will have an ISBN record. The organizing committee will send formatting requirements for the full papers along with the acceptance letters. The deadline for sending the documents for publication will be May 11, 2024, to allow presenters to take advantage of feedback received during the symposium.
